If you’ve started turning down dinner invitations because headlights make the drive home difficult, tell us at your cataract consultation. That detail helps us understand how cataracts affect your day and what you want surgery to change. When we meet with patients from New Smyrna Beach and Edgewater, we also ask which tasks you’d most like to do without reaching for glasses.
During cataract surgery, we replace your cloudy natural lens with an intraocular lens, or IOL. We measure your eye to select the lens power and check for conditions that could affect your vision after surgery. Then we discuss how each option fits your priorities.
A monofocal lens focuses at one distance. If we set it for distance vision, you’ll likely use reading glasses to check a text or read a menu.
A toric lens can correct astigmatism, which can blur vision at any distance. Toric correction is available in both monofocal and multifocal lenses.
A multifocal lens can reduce your need for glasses at more than one distance. Some people notice halos around headlights, a trade-off worth discussing if you often drive after dark.
The RxSight Light Adjustable Lens lets us fine-tune the lens power after surgery. It requires additional office visits for light treatments and special UV-protective glasses until we tell you it’s safe to stop wearing them.
Arrange a ride home on surgery day and wait for our clearance before driving again. Many people can read or watch TV as soon as it feels comfortable, though vision may be blurry at first. Swimming and heavy lifting need to wait while your eye heals. If your job involves lifting or you swim laps most mornings, ask us when you can safely return to that activity.
Your first checkup is usually within a day or two. We check your vision and eye pressure, examine how your eye is healing, and review any prescribed drops. At later visits, we can tell you when your vision is stable enough for a new glasses prescription.
Between visits, call us right away for a sudden drop in vision, worsening pain or redness, new flashes of light, or a sudden increase in floaters. These symptoms need prompt attention.
